History
We have a long history! Peace United Church of Christ was founded in 1905—yes, way back then.

After a couple of years meeting in homes, our mother church St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, built our first church building on 7th and Broadway (now it’s a Holiday gas station). There were various changes over the years between affiliations and focus but in 1956, Peace opened its doors to our current location. In 1957, Peace Church officially became part of the United Church of Christ, which is a merger of four denominations.
We are an open and affirming congregation.
Open and Affirming (ONA) is a special designation in the United Church of Christ (UCC). It requires a vote and commitment from each congregation, campus ministry, or other body that wishes to obtain the designation. The designation means that a group has made a public covenant to welcome persons of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. Peace United voted to become an ONA congregation in September 2006 and has remained committed to its promise.
A Sanctuary Church
In September 2017, Peace Church approved a resolution to provide physical refuge for those in the community facing deportation orders, also known as becoming a Sanctuary Church.
A Lasting Legacy
Over the 120 years we have been in Rochester, our staff and congregation have been integrally involved in the community and in many social justice issues. We are passionate about creating an open and affirming place where everyone feels safe and welcome.
